FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I watch my child dance?

Sprouts Creative Movement - Parents, carers and siblings are always welcome in our Sprouts classes. A loved one close by can offer additional support to ensure your child feels comfortable and confident to enjoy their class. Parents/carers are also welcome to join in to assist their child.

Seedlings Creative Movement - Families are welcome to watch their child dancing during these classes. As the year progresses many Seedlings dancers develop the confidence and independence to attend the class without a family member inside the studio.

Ballet and contemporary - I kindly ask that parents, carers and siblings of ballet students head to the park, go out for a coffee or wait outside for the duration of the class. I know many parents love watching their children each week, however at times our space becomes a little congested and noisy for the kids trying to learn. Dancers have the opportunity to share their dancing with family and friends at the end of each term. There are exceptions for children who may require additional support or for first lessons.

What clothing does my child need to wear?

Creative Movement - Wear something comfortable and easy to move in.

Ballet - There are no set uniforms at Naturally Dance and children are free to choose their own ballet attire. Leotards, leggings or ballet tights are preferred to ensure correct ballet technique and safe dance practices.

Contemporary - Wear something comfortable. As there is a lot of floor-work in this class it is advisable to wear a t-shirt/long sleeved top and leggings.

Do I need to buy dance shoes?

Creative Movement  - no need to buy any dance shoes. Bare feet are perfect.

Ballet - Please wear a pair of ballet shoes. Leather or canvas ballet shoes are fine to wear. Many families donate the old ballet shoes their children have outgrown and there may be a pair in our donation area that fits your child.

What should I expect in my first class?

Creative Movement - The class begins in a circle with children imitating movement to songs and rhymes. The class moves to a warm up, movement activities, improvisation, games or sequences before ending with a story expressed through movement.

Ballet - The ballet classes are creative, fun and relaxed, however they do follow a more traditional ballet structure starting with barre exercises, before progressing to centre work. These classes will differ slightly from formal ballet classes as I try to be a little more creative and flexible to adjust to the children in each class.

Contemporary - Contemporary classes start with a flowing warm-up sequence, spinal rolls, spirals and stretch. Throughout the class dancers will learn a variety of phrases that include floor-work and travel sequences.

Are there any performances?

At the end of each term, all students have the opportunity to share their new skills and celebrate their achievements with their family and friends. Term 1 and term 3 is shared though an open class during normal class times, term 2 offers a mid-year recital for students and term 4 will be celebrated with a special end of year performance.
